Presentation

SELANDIA ENSEMBLE consists of five distinguished Danish musicians, all actively engaged as soloists, chamber musicians and orchestral players. The members of the ensemble are: Ingrid Holck, flute – Niels Eje, oboe – Bo Sand, clarinet – Allan Bendsen, horn and Klaus Frederiksen, bassoon.

Prior to forming the ensemble in 1981, the members had already made a name for themselves individually as concert players and in competitions, nationally as well as internationally. This meant that expectations were high when SELANDIA ENSEMBLE was formed. During the 80s the ensemble appeared frequently at festivals and music societies. The ensemble also performed on radio and television.

In 1989 the ensemble released its first CD. A fine reception in the international press meant that SELANDIA ENSEMBLE was invited to perform abroad.

During the 90s the ensemble’s activities have increased considerably. Besides several CD releases, SELANDIA ENSEMBLE has made a number of tours abroad, including a tour of Japan, and another in preparation for March/April 1999 and they have appeared on European as well as on Japanese television.

SELANDIA ENSEMBLE constitutes a wind quintet, but because the ensemble allows each instrument to expand beyond its traditional role in the wind quintet, the broader definition of "ensemble" was chosen deliberately. Consistent programming of solos, duos, trios and quartets, has contributed to the recognition SELANDIA ENSEMBLE has received for creative and versatile concerts.

One of the ensemble’s visions is to expand conventional frames for the performance of chamber music. This includes a deliberate attempt to reach a younger audience by employing the effects of amplification of instruments, often by working together with musicians trained within the rhythmic genre.
